Today, I pulled two random zines out of my collection to post. The first is a zine I’ve had lying around for awhile, RRR.001.
“We make waste for a living. So now we’re gonna make waste live.”
This line describes RRR.001 perfectly. For the most part the zine is a collection of things made from waste. There’s a lot of forgotten doodles, cut up photographs, and re-purposed projects. Basically it’s zine full of recycled art. It’s a really big zine and features too many artists to name. It’s co-published by Untitled Publishing, printed on recycled paper, and limited to a 1,000 copies.
It’s a great zine and I recommend you pick it up if you get a chance. It’s awesome to see people make something out of waste. The zine is only fifteen bones and they are already working on a second one. Also, I encourage you to make some recycled art of your own and submit it to the RRR Flickr Group.
I’m a gigantic fan of people who doodle everyday. I’ve been doodling ever day for awhile, as you can see in my sketchbooks. One thing I don’t do though, is post a doodle everyday, but Chris Piascik does.
He’s been doing this for two years I believe. If you go to his Flickr page you can see the archive of his daily drawings. If you take a look at his first daily drawing you can see how much he has improved over two years.
I love to see how people evolve with their art. Lately he has been doing some totally rad doodles on black paper, this really makes the colored pencils pop. Take some time to look at his work, get inspired, and start a daily project of your own.
Growing up I used to look at old Popular Mechanics at my Grandma’s house. The one thing that fascinated me the most was: the cars, houses, and gadgets of the future. They always had beautiful illustrations of what these things looked like. Out of all those things the houses of the future amazed me the most. They were always so interesting.
Once I got older I always found it fascinating when I would stumble upon pictures of interesting houses, living spaces, and artist’s studios. There’s just something interesting about the way other people live. Which brings me to my point, The Way We Live is a collection of dope images of how people live and might live.
It’s a bummer that the blog is pretty much donzo, it’s so amazing. Looking through it reminds me so much of those old Popular Mechanics. I do have to admit that a short article about the image/ways we live would’ve made the blog a zillion times better. If anyone knows a similar blog let me know.
I know, I know I’m like a zillion months late on this band/track/music video, but who cares? “Lust For Life” by Girls is amazing. I read about the track everyday this past summer, but was too busy chillin’ in Chillsville, OR to ever give it a listen. I also always thought it was a cover of the Iggy Pop song. Check out the video for “Lust For Life” below.
There’s also a “Hardcore” version of the music video which is pretty cool. Both music videos are directed by Aaron Brown. Now that you have been blown away by two amazing video’s go check out Album. Stay carefree.
Rumblings of Dr. Dre’s Detox album have been around since the Jurassic Park III came out. Seems like every week we hear some tidbit about the album. In the midst of all these rumblings I never took the time to think what the album cover might look like. Well, it turns out Mike Deal has.
I love the cover Mike created, and after reading his reasoning behind the cover I love it even more. In his reasoning he mentions modifying the typography for each single, swapping out Detox for the single’s title. Really smart idea. He came up with a perfect concept for the cover.
Makes me wonder what the real cover will end up looking like. Personally I think it would be dope if when Dr. Dre does decide to release Detox he picks up the phone and calls Mike.
PS I have to give thanks to Chris Piascik for introducing me to Mike’s work via Twitter.
I’ve never been stoked on Podcasts before, but yesterday I discovered the Stones Throw Podcast. In fact it might be the first Podcast I’ve ever listened too.
Above is the cover for their latest Podcast, How Does The Room Feel About It?, which I believe is designed by Jeff Jank, Stones Throw’s Art Director. This Podcast is especially amazing! It’s created from Nite Jewel’s collection of old records. Really mellow, really awesome records. Nite Jewel has a record coming out on Stones Throw tentatively titled Nite-Funk.
I’ve also listened to a couple of their older Podcasts too and they’re also really rad. The two other ones I have listened to are: Minimal Wave, a collection of early D.I.Y. electronica from the Minimal Wave label mixed by Veronica Vasicka, and Thank You Jay Dee, Act 4, a collection of various J Dilla tracks mixed by J.Rocc.
Check the podcast out if you get a chance, there’s 54 of them so far. Also if you know of any other rad Podcasts let me know.
