Interview with Hellomatt
Hellomatt is a dope designer that works for ilovedust. Super Duper shot him some questions and he shot some answers right back.
Favorite cereal?
I have so many favorites i couldn’t possibly name one. Every morning I have 4 cereals in one bowl, always with a Weetabix on top, that’s not normal is it?!
How did you get started in the world of design?
Since I was a kid I was always drawing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and soccer badges/logos. I always carried a pen and paper around, that led to taking art at school and college. Then whilst at university I started to work as a in house designer at a clothing company. I gained my studio experience there for 3 years before moving on to work at ilovedust, where I have now been for 2 years.
Talk about your first paid design project. How do you think you’ve evolved since then?
My first paid job was at college, one of the teachers paid me to design a flyer for the end of year party. I still have the flyer, and it’s funny my style is pretty similar now to as it was then, 8 years on. Bold colors, big type, and not too serious.
What has been your favorite project so far?
My favorite freelance project so far would have to be a job I did for Hypebeast a few years ago. Hypebeast had only been going for a couple of months or so, I offered to redesign the web banner at the top of the page. I submitted one every month for 4 or 5 months, that was great to get my work out to such a wide audience and one I was part of myself, thanks to Kevin for that opportunity! Now Hypebeast is one of the biggest blogs in the world, so it’s been interesting to watch it grow.
What projects are you currently working?
I am working on some t-shirt graphics for a new streetwear label in America, which are yet to be released. And a set of new personal screen prints.
Your typography and design kinda has a retro feel where do you get your influence from?
I collect old Letraset and Mecanorma graphic books from the 80s. And I love old American signage and sports logos.
Do you have any advice for any young designers?
Take photos and collect things which inspire you, and use the internet as a platform to get your work seen by as many people as possible. Pretty obvious advice really.
What’s in store for the future?
Working hard, pushing on with more freelance jobs, riding my bike more.
Any last words?
Always Be Closing.
